ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

These standards apply to all team sports as well as to other activities which require long-term or intensive commitment (including Student Activities Committee and dramatic productions).

Eligibility means that a student has met the following requirements and is free to participate fully in any approved extracurricular event. Academic requirements are based on the most recent report card. A student must …

  1. Be a current student in grades 7-12

  2. Have earned a 2 G.P.A. for the most recently completed quarter

  3. Have earned all passing grades for the most recently completed quarter (no F’s)

  4. Be a student in good standing. A student who is suspended (in-school or at home) will be declared immediately ineligible for the rest of the current season.

Probation means that, while the last quarter’s report card met approval, there have been sufficient academic or disciplinary concerns to warrant close observation. For example, a student may be placed on probation if he gets an interim report indicating failing work in any class, or if he gets as many as three negative interim reports (that is, he might be passing, but is earning a low grade or is not behaving well). Students may also be placed on probation for disciplinary concerns.

Special Cases:

  1. A student may be placed on probation for first quarter activities rather than declared ineligible if he fails to fulfill either #2 or #3 above (not both) on his previous fourth quarter report card. (If he has failed to meet a 2.2 GPA and has an F on the prior fourth quarter report card, he will be ineligible for first quarter activities.)
  2. A 7th or 8th-grade student may sometimes be considered for probation rather than be declared ineligible if he fails to fulfill either #2 or #3 above (not both) on his most recent report card. This opportunity would depend on individual circumstances such as the effort he put forth and on the approval of the principal and coach and the agreement of the coach to oversee his progress.

Probation will involve the following measures to help the student continue to meet eligibility requirements:

  1. He will take a form to all of his teachers weekly. On this form, the teacher will indicate his current grade and any other classroom concerns.
  2. While he would be able to practice, he will not be allowed to play in games in team sports until all of his grades are brought up to passing and/or any other serious concerns have been adequately dealt with. (This measure does not apply to non-sports activities.)
  3. He will become ineligible if he fails a test, quiz (not counting pop quizzes), or other significant graded assignment (like a paper or project). If he becomes ineligible, he will remain ineligible until the end of the quarter.
  4. A student’s return to eligibility would depend on his success on the next report card.
